A late maturing calabrese for an extended cropping period, ready to harvest 110-115 days from sowing, normally mid-September to November. The large, domed, dark green, tightly-budded heads hold very well in the garden. Calabrese variety. Calabrese produces a large central head which should be cut and eaten. Delicious, smaller shoots (Broccoli Spears) will follow from each leaf joint. These should be cut with about 15cm (6") of stem. Sow 1.8cm (¾") deep on a prepared seed bed end April-May. Plant out in final positions, 60cm (2') apart June-July. Harvest October-November. Can use the seed as 'sprouting seed' - indications that antioxidants are at their highest in sprouts. HEALTH BENEFITS - Antioxidant. High in vitamins A (For growth, healthy hair, skin, bones, teeth and eyes as well as resistance to respiratory infections), and C (Anti-ageing, wound healing, decreasing blood cholesterol and prevention of infections. Assists the body in absorbing iron), and a good source of iron. ANTIOXIDANTS: Term used to describe a number of organic substances such as vitamins A, C & E, the mineral Selenium and 'Carotenoids' - the pigments which colour many fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are thought to help prevent cancers, heart and stroke problems by assisting in the 'mopping up' and expulsion from the body of substances known as 'free radicals' which can be created by exposure to various environmental pollutants. COOKING HINTS: Best flavour within hours of harvest and steamed not boiled.
